Each year in the United States over 240,000 homes are destroyed
by Fire in the winter months.
Each year have a qualified serviceman check and clean your furnace.
Keep your flue pipes clean.
Keep all paper, trash, and flammable products away from furnace.
Make sure all fireplace openings are covered with strudy metal
screen or glass doors.
Never leave a fire unattended.
Have your chimney cleaned and checked before and after heating
season for obstructions and failures.
Burn on dry, well-seasoned hardwoods.
Avoid leaving small children unattended in rooms with portable
heaters.
Avoid using portable heaters where flammable vapors may be present.
ie Garages
Make sure curtains and blankets or anything that will burn is
kept at least 36" away from portables heaters and baseboard
heaters.
Have smoke detectors on every level of your home especially near
bedrooms.
Be sure to change smoke detector batteries.
Test detectors once a month.
Smoke is responsible for about 3/4 of all fire deaths.
Have a fire escape plan for every room in the house.
Have a predetermined place to meet outside the house.
Never reenter a burning building remember the Fire Department
is just a few minutes away.
