On Tuesday, September 23, 2025, Clinton Police were dispatched to a reported stabbing at El Indio Mexican restaurant, located at 1115 N. Charles Seivers Blvd.
Upon arrival, officers learned that a verbal altercation had occurred inside the restaurant between suspects David Shifflett (44), Tyler Novak (27), and victim Jonathan Massey (33). The argument escalated, leading Shifflett and Massey outside where a physical confrontation ensued. During the fight, Novak allegedly stabbed Massey twice with a "box cutter" style blade.
Shifflett and Novak then fled the scene in a vehicle. Clinton Police officers quickly located the suspect vehicle traveling westbound on N. Charles Seivers Blvd. and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle failed to stop and, after driving through a business parking lot and down an embankment, came to a rest on railroad tracks.
Both suspects then fled on foot. Officers pursued and successfully took Shifflett and Novak into custody without incident near the intersection of Market St. and Commerce St. Shifflett and Novak were then transported to the Anderson County Detention Facility and charged with the following:
Novak - Aggravated Assault, Evading Arrest, Tampering with Evidence, Disorderly Conduct, and Public Intoxication.
Shifflett - Driving Under the Influence, Evading Arrest, Reckless Driving, Disorderly Conduct, and Reckless Endangerment.
Jonathan Massey was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries and has since been released.

Investigation Update
The City of Clinton's annual 4th of July celebration is upon us and we wanted to remind attendees and participants of a few safety items: HEAT!! - It is forecasted to be very hot and dry. Please remember to stay hydrated and wear appropriate sun protection. DRONES - A reminder that it is illegal to fly drones over large gatherings, water, and moving vehicles. A violation of these could result in a large fine by the F.A.A. FIREWORKS - The City of Clinton municipal code 7-602 prohibits fireworks to be deployed anywhere within city limits. The city has made a significant investment in a permitted and controlled fireworks display for your enjoyment! Come to Lakefront Park to enjoy!! NOISE - Please be courteous to your neighbors with your celebrations. The City of Clinton noise ordinance 11-201 and 11-202 specifically states between the hours of 11:00 pm and 7:00am that residents are to be respectful and not create unnecessary noise within city limits. Thank you for your respectful attention to these safety points! Let's all work together to make this celebration of our Nation's Independence a safe, courteous, and fun event for everyone!
